Purpose is the driving force behind great companies. A shared Purpose unites leaders and employees, and sets organizations on the way to the success.
To become great, a company’s guiding direction must be more than simply creating profits for its stakeholders: It must have a Purpose that appeals to the moral instincts of its employees. This is not to say that the bottom line does not matter. In fact, by aiming for an objective that is more important than profits companies actually provide greater returns over the long run.
The reason why Purpose is so powerful is because it is founded on people’s deeply held ideas about what is right and worthwhile. When leaders tap into these ideas, they improve morale, they stimulate innovation, and they help to maintain strong relationships. Indeed, Purpose helps improve performance in all the areas of a business where people play an important role. It can help a manager to set the direction for a team, just as it can help a CEO to reinvigorate a lagging corporation.
The Purpose Profiler enables leaders to better understand their own Purpose, and the Purpose of their company. As a Greek myself, I have always believed in the importance of the ancient aphorism “Know thyself”, which was inscribed in golden letters on the entrance to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Understanding your Purpose can lead you to work for organizations whose moral ideas resonate with your own, and so it can help you find fulfillment in life. This is even more important for a leader: your Purpose sets the direction for everyone else to follow.
